When I started with solo ads there were no solo ad marketplaces.

Solo ad sellers were kind of like your friendly neighborhood dope dealers.

You had to know a guy who knew a guy who knows the dealer's beeper number.

Everything's changed though.

Nowadays, you spit and you hit a solo ad provider.

They're climbing from under of every rock.

No wonder all those solo ad marketplaces like udimi, solochecker and a dozen others have sprouted in the recent years.

And they really make your life easier, don't they?

They bring all solo ad sellers under one roof, rate them and even protect you against fraud.

But here's a question nobody's asking:

Are solo ad marketplaces really as awesome as they market themselves to be?

May 2011.

My laptop crashed.

It was a common error for windows laptops at the time - the blue screen of death.

When that happens, there's a good chance you'll have to replace your hard drive or graphics card.

And I wasn't looking forward to the bill.

But I had to get it fixed because at the time I was trying to build my list building empire through blogging.

And I needed a laptop to write articles.

I deposited my laptop with the technician earlier that day.

When I came by to pick it up we got chatting and he asked what I do.

I told him about my blogging ventures, how I used forum marketing to drive traffic to the blog and how I was building a following on Twitter.

His response was a cliche "oh, you're one of those spammer a-holes who market products on forums!"

I didn't appreciate being labeled a spammer. No one would, I guess.

We got into a 40 minute argument about spamming. It was no use changing this dude's mind.

Fast forward 4 years later.

I met him in our local bar "Muza." We only got one bar in town, so it's hard to NOT see each other on Friday night.

He approached me and asked if he could buy me a beer.

I said he could buy me a soda, because I don't drink and I was only in a bar because my friends like the place.

We got talking and he went on to tell me about how he followed me online, appreciated what I've done and how I've helped people and even asked me to teach him my unruly ways.

My point:

What he once thought was spamming was now becoming a noble profession to him.

Which begs a question - how do you respond to someone who shames you for being a marketer?

How do you FEEL about marketing info products and business opportunities?

Are you proud or guilty to sell?

I wasn't born naturally funny.

Growing up I was fat and kept to myself.

Anytime I opened my mouth to say something funny I ended up embarrassing myself.

I learned to keep my mouth shut when I'm around people.

But I always had a passion for comedy.

I spent hundreds of hours watching stand up acts performed by the greats like Steve Martin, Chris Rock, George Carlin and others.

I always figured these guys were naturally funny.

Like they were gifted and I wasn't.

But after reading George Carlin's and Steve Martin's biographies I learned I was wrong.

Turned out the greatest comics of all time are NOT funny in real life.

And that the secret to great comedy lies in understanding one simple communication concept they all use (no exception).

Wait, Igor, but what does stand up comedy have to do with writing emails that convert?

Everything.

I was working around the clock.

I prospected.

I put out offers.

I wrote unique content.

I drove traffic (mostly free though).

But nobody wanted to join me in business.

It was a year since I started marketing my first online MLM.

In spite of it costing $10/mo the task of getting someone to say "YES!" seemed insurmountable.

At first I didn't understand why.

Later, I recognized the reason why people would shut the virtual door in my face.

It was simple.

It made a lot of sense too.

I didn't blame them.

The reason nobody joined me in business is because nobody wants to work with an insecure newbie. They want a confident veteran with battle scars to take them under their wing.

But how do you become a pro if you can't recruit anyone?

That seems to be the question on everyone's mind these days.

It's sort of a catch 22.

To get more customers, you have to become a leader. But you can't get be a leader if you got no customers!

I'm excited to report I figured the missing puzzle piece.

The #1 reason MLMers switch from traditional marketing to internet marketing is to create duplication.
